It is said to be tantamount to reducing these fetuses and embryos to mere objects for others’ use, instead of subjects with inherent rights that must be given equal protection. Moreover, if it’s the nearness of death that becomes a part of the basis for deciding for permitting the killing of human beings, it’s also like saying that terminally-ill patients, military service personnel facing combats, and death-row inmates could be killed for their organs and stem cells too to benefit the majority.

Due to this debate, the use of human embryos and fetuses in stem cell research, whether dead or living, has been made illegal while the use of adult cells is legal.

Researchers in the US western state of California now have government approval to begin the first human clinical trial of a treatment derived from human embryonic stem cells. The scientists will test a therapy that is designed to regenerate nerve cells in people who have suffered spinal cord injuries. What You Should Know About Adult Stem Cell

Adult stem cell research has advanced in leaps and bounds over the past decade. What was once viewed as inflexible, unable to proliferate and set in its ways has now been found to revert back to its earlier state. New evidence suggests that taking an adult stem cell from bone marrow or the spinal cord can become a blank slate like fetal stem cells, rather than possessing the sole ability to produce more bone marrow or more spinal cord tissue only. As a result of this finding, scientists hope to create more effective treatments for a wide range of degenerative diseases and disabling injuries.

The adult stem cell shares two characteristics with the fetal stem cell. They can both replicate to create identical copies of themselves for extended periods of time, thus are self-renewing.

Additionally, they can morph into other cell types and perform specialized functions. While it was previously believed that adult stem cells were set in their ways and committed to becoming a particular cell type, it’s recently been discovered that they are, in fact, much more flexible than was ever imagined.

One of the most exciting adult stem cell discoveries occurred in 2008 when researchers at the Salk Institute for Biological Studies in La Jolla, California coaxed mouse brain stemcells to differentiate into support cells and function with the surrounding neuronal network. When pampered in a Petri dish, scientists found that they could encourage oligodendrocyte cells to form the fatty myelin sheath that speeds up the transfer of electrical signals along the axons.

They could also stimulate cellular growth in the hippocampus; the brain’s center for memories and learning. Scientists hope this research can provide a breakthrough in the treatment of multiple sclerosis, Alzheimer’s, stroke and epilepsy.

There are a few challenges to working with the adult stem cell. If used outside the body, scientists must take great care to ensure the culture is 100% germ-free and pure. In many studies using mice, the cultures have been only 80% pure.

As an organism ages, there are a number of factors that could jeopardize the purity of the stem cell sample, such as exposure to toxins, disease or DNA errors, for instance. Great care must also be taken to ensure that cells replicate as needed and don’t go crazy to form cancerous tumors.

Since the immune system is trained to attack any foreign invaders, any stem cell transplants may be subject to intense scrutiny, even if it is derived from one’s own cells. Despite these challenges, there is much to be excited about in the field of adult stem cell research.

All about Stem cells; why you should care

The controversy is ongoing about stem cell research. You have heard the many different news stories about them and know that Congress and the President debate this issue, but what is the real story behind the stem cell and its controversy?

Basically, stem cells are found in all creatures. A stem cell can even renew itself and in some cases, can be used to help other types of cells in your body recover from diseases. Now, this is where the debate begins.

There are three different types of stem cells that are being talked about today. The first is the embryonic stem cell, the second is the adult stem cell, and the third is the cord blood stem cell. You are thinking, okay, there are three different types, but all I have heard on the news is the debate over using embryonic stem cell research and how this is killing unborn children.

The main issue here is which type of stem cell is the best. Unfortunately, scientists believe that the embryonic stem cell is the best as it comes from a fertilized human egg. This has brought about great debate in the public arena over the use of these fertilized eggs and whether or not it is morally wrong to use them. At the present time, it is illegal to use these for medical research.

There are the other two options that are available and while not as good as the embryonic stem cells, they do offer some hope for certain medical conditions. One excellent example is the stem cell transplant (also know as a bone marrow transplant). Adult stem cells are collected from volunteers and processed before being given to chemotherapy patients. These fresh adult stem cells are them assimilated into their bodies and begin rebuilding the blood cells in the sick person–something their body can no longer do because of the other medical treatments they are receiving.

In the right environment, researchers can grow stem cells into other cells. This has lead to other debates and concerns regarding their use in medical treatments and even in cloning experiments.

Regardless of your position on stem cell research, you need to understand that it is not all about killing unborn fetuses and using their cells for experiments. You need to realize that there are two other types of stem cells that are also available and scientists are working with these to try to come up with cures for many diseases.

The debate will continue in the media and at many levels of our government for many years to come. Regardless of the outcome, scientists know that advancements can and will be made in all three areas of stem cell research. It is just a matter of time before they conquer many of the horrible diseases that affect us today.
